Purpose:
Utility customers have at least 21 days to pay their utility bill. This policy establishes how the municipality will handle utility accounts past due.
Policy:
45 Days After Billing Date
- Any account holder with an arrears balance will receive a notice advising of payment due to avoid having the account officially transferred to property taxes.
60+ Days After Billing Date
- Delinquent account balances will be transferred to property taxes and begin accruing interest. Delinquent accounts are any previously finalized, closed or active accounts with a balance left outstanding by the account holder. The Municipality will not knowingly provide further services to a customer at a new location if that customer owes on a previous account.
Landlords/Owners
- If municipality does not receive information about a new tenant, the billing will automatically be put in the landlord/property owner’s name.
- If landlord/property owner receives a bill for charges that they believe should be billed to a tenant, it will be the landlord/property owners’ responsibility to collect money from the tenant for that bill.
- A new account will be opened in the tenant’s name once the Municipality is made aware of that information.
- Notification will be sent to the landlord/property owner of the tenant's final bill amount.
- If a forwarding address for the tenant is known, the final utility bill will be forwarded to that address. If a forwarding address is not known, the tenant’s final utility bill will be forwarded to the landlord/property owner.
